Why We Slowed Down for the Green Lights

My husband and I were driving yesterday when we saw green lights on a car. My husband said that I should slow down and let them pass, even though he didn’t know exactly why. I’ve never slowed down for green lights on a car before. What do green lights on a car mean?

Curious, I looked it up when we got home. It turns out that in many places, green lights are used on vehicles driven by volunteer emergency responders. These can include volunteer firefighters, emergency medical personnel, or search-and-rescue volunteers who are responding to a call. The green light lets other drivers know that the person may be heading to an emergency, even though they are not driving a traditional police car, ambulance, or fire truck.

The exact meaning of green lights can vary depending on the state, province, or country. In some areas, drivers are encouraged to yield when it is safe to do so. In others, the green light is simply an identifier and does not give the driver any special traffic privileges.

That explained why my husband instinctively wanted to let the car pass. Even though we weren’t certain of the rule at the moment, giving someone extra space on the road seemed like the courteous thing to do.

I learned something new that day. The next time I see green lights on a vehicle, I’ll know they may belong to someone rushing to help others in an emergency, and I’ll be extra aware and respectful on the road.
