The Warning He Thought I’d Fear

My husband left me years ago when his mistress got pregnant. Last week, our 2 kids alone, last week, he suddenly appeared at my door with his daughter—the one he had with her—and asked me to babysit. I refused. I froze when he suddenly said, “If you don’t help me, you’ll regret it till the end of your days!” Then he stormed off, calling me a heartless, cruel witch. Two months passed, and I’d nearly forgotten about it… until one Saturday morning, there was a knock at my door.

When I opened it, I found his daughter standing there with a small backpack and a folded note in her hand. My stomach dropped. The note was from him. It said he had an “urgent business trip” and would be back in three days. No question, no apology—just an assumption that I would clean up his mess like always.

I called him over and over, but his phone was off. I couldn’t leave a little girl alone, so I brought her inside. During those three days, she was quiet, polite, and heartbreakingly careful, as if she’d learned not to ask for too much. My kids slowly warmed up to her, and by the second night they were all building pillow forts in the living room.

He came back four days later, acting like nothing happened. But this time, I was ready. I handed him a lawyer’s business card and said, “Threaten me again, abandon your child again, and the next knock you hear will be from social services.”
