My neighbors left for vacation and sent me a voicemail asking if I could wrap their door handle in aluminum foil because they forgot to do it themselves. They didn’t say why. I did it, but I felt weird because I had no idea why. Any ideas?
At first, I thought it might be some strange superstition or an old family tradition. After all, people have all kinds of unusual habits before leaving home for an extended trip. But curiosity got the better of me, so I started asking around and looking for possible explanations.
One theory was that the foil could help protect the handle from extreme weather, especially if the metal gets very hot in direct sunlight. Another possibility was that it was meant to keep the handle clean from dust, pollen, or bird droppings while they were away. Some people even suggested that a foil-covered handle might act as a simple signal to trusted neighbors that the homeowners were out of town.
The most interesting explanation came from a retired police officer who lived nearby. He said some homeowners wrap foil around door handles when they leave because it makes it easier to notice if someone has tampered with the door. If the foil is torn, moved, or missing when they return, they know someone may have tried to enter the house.
Whether that was the real reason or not, I never found out. But when my neighbors returned, the foil was untouched—and so was their home. Sometimes the simplest tricks bring the greatest peace of mind.
