The Truth Inside the Deposit Box

Inside was a stack of letters tied together with a faded blue ribbon.

At first, I thought they were old bills or legal papers. But when I opened the first envelope, I recognized my mother’s handwriting immediately.

My hands started shaking.

The letters were all addressed to my dad. In every one, she begged him to let her see me more often after the divorce. She wrote about birthdays she missed, school plays she cried through alone, and gifts she bought that were never given to me.

Then I found something worse.

Court documents.

My father had lied during the custody battle. He had hidden money, bribed a witness, and convinced me for years that my mother abandoned me willingly. The final paper was a confession signed by him just months before his death.

At the bottom, he had written:

“I stole your childhood from your mother because I was angry she stopped loving me. She deserved better, and so did you.”

I couldn’t breathe.

For seven years, I ignored my mother’s calls. I skipped holidays with her. When she cried, I believed it was manipulation.

That same night, I drove to her house holding the letters in my lap.

When she opened the door, she froze in shock.

Before she could speak, I broke down crying and whispered, “Mom… I know the truth now.”
