The Truth Behind Grandpa’s Grape Juice

When I was seven, I used to walk Grandpa to his house every Saturday after we spent the morning together. Once inside, he would hold my hands, gently touch my face, smile warmly, and then hand me a glass of grape juice before we played cards or watched old western movies. It became our little tradition, and I never questioned it.

Years later, after Grandpa passed away, I found myself thinking about those afternoons. A cousin mentioned how strange it was that Grandpa always insisted on giving us juice before anything else. The comment stuck with me, and I couldn’t stop wondering if there had been something I had missed as a child.

Curiosity eventually led me to ask my grandmother. She smiled sadly and opened a small wooden box filled with old medical papers. That’s when I learned the truth.

Grandpa had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease much earlier than anyone outside the family knew. The medication often made his hands shake so badly that he worried he might accidentally drop something or lose his balance. Before I arrived, he would take his medicine with grape juice because it was the only drink that hid its bitter taste.

Holding my hands wasn’t suspicious at all—it was how he steadied himself. Touching my face was his quiet way of making sure he could still recognize every little feature of the grandchild he adored.

The memory I once feared became one of the greatest reminders of his unconditional love.
