A Wedding Day That Healed Old Wounds

I resented my ex-husband’s wife for ruining my marriage twelve years ago. For our daughter’s wedding I asked that she not be invited, but he insisted, “Wherever I go, my wife goes.” I protested: “I’m the bride’s mom. I don’t want her here!” She smiled and left. Moments before walking down the aisle I heard my daughter scream. I rushed to her and found her trembling in tears beside a ruined bouquet and a torn dress. She wasn’t hurt, overwhelmed by the day’s stress and the tension between her father’s new wife and me. She collapsed into my arms, whispering, “Mom, I just want peace today. Please… help me.” Her plea pierced years of resentment. In that instant I realized the day belonged to her, not to my old wounds. As I steadied her breathing and mended her dress, his wife approached holding the repaired bouquet she’d fixed with extra flowers. She said only, “She deserves a beautiful day.” For the first time I saw beyond my anger. She wasn’t the woman who had once hurt me; she was a person trying to support the woman we loved. The ceremony went on. My daughter walked down the aisle radiant. My ex stood proudly, his wife respectfully in the background. I felt a shift—healing from grace, peace and understanding over bitterness.
