We had been together for ten years, and I was the one who kept our lives afloat. I built my company from the ground up, paid the bills, and trusted my common-law husband completely. Unknown to me, he had started an affair. To impress his new girlfriend, he told her we were legally married and that he already owned half of my business and everything else I had worked so hard to earn.
When she became pregnant, she began asking questions about their future. She wanted to know when he would leave me and collect “his share” so they could buy a house together. Instead of admitting the truth, he doubled down on the lie.
One afternoon, she contacted me directly, believing I was standing in the way of her happy ending. During our conversation, I calmly explained that we had never been legally married and that my company had always belonged solely to me. I even showed her the business registration and property records.
The color drained from her face. She realized he had lied about everything—not only about his finances but also about our relationship.
She left him that same week.
A month later, he showed up at my office begging for another chance, claiming he had made a terrible mistake. I simply wished him well and reminded him that honesty costs nothing, but lies can cost everything.
