The Mother-in-Law’s Unexpected Words

When I was 7 months pregnant, I found out that my husband had an affair. I got so upset that I ended up in the hospital, and my husband packed his things and left for his mistress. So I am on IV, crying. And then my mother-in-law comes into the ward. She sits on the edge of the bed and says,

“Lena, I never liked you, so you know I’m not saying this because I’m on your side.”

Those words stung, and I braced myself for whatever cruel thing would come next.

But then she surprised me.

She took my hand and said, “I never liked you because I thought you were too strong-willed for my son. I thought you challenged him too much. But today I see the truth. You were the one carrying this family, and he was too weak to appreciate it.”

I stared at her in shock.

She continued, “What he did is unforgivable. And if he can walk away from his wife and unborn child, then he is not the man I raised him to be.”

For the first time since learning about the affair, I felt seen.

My mother-in-law spent the next few hours sitting with me. She brought me meals, spoke to the doctors, and made sure I wasn’t alone. When my son was born two months later, she was there in the waiting room before anyone else.

My husband eventually tried to come back. His relationship with the other woman fell apart. But by then, I had rebuilt my life.

And the person who helped me find my strength again was the one person I never expected—my mother-in-law.
