My God… seconds later, they both looked straight at me.
Dave’s face went white.
The woman stepped back as if she’d seen a ghost.
Before I could say a word, she whispered, “I’m sorry… I never wanted you to find out like this.”
My heart pounded. Every terrible possibility raced through my mind.
Dave raised his hands. “Please, let me explain.”
The woman interrupted him.
“No,” she said softly. “She deserves to hear it from me.”
She took a deep breath and reached into her purse, pulling out a faded photograph. It showed a young man standing beside her over twenty years ago.
It was Dave.
“I was married to his older brother,” she explained. “When he disappeared after a hiking accident, your husband spent months helping me search. We never found him.”
Dave nodded, unable to speak.
She continued, “When I saw him today, I panicked because I blamed him for years. I believed he’d given up too soon. But after moving here, I learned the truth from old police records. He never stopped looking.”
Tears filled Dave’s eyes.
“I came today to apologize,” she said. “Not to destroy your marriage.”
She handed him a small metal compass that had belonged to his brother.
“I’ve carried this for two decades. It belongs with your family.”
That evening, we sat together listening to stories I’d never heard before.
Sometimes the biggest secrets aren’t about betrayal.
They’re about grief, guilt, and finally finding the courage to let both of them go.
