The Unexpected Split Check

My friend invited me to this fancy steakhouse. I’d told her I can’t drop $200 on food, so I’d go light. There, she ordered a giant steak with three sides, appetizers, and even dessert. Me? Just a salad and water.

When the waiter brought the bill, she smiled and said, “Oh, we’ll just split it.”

I nodded.

What she didn’t know was that I’d secretly asked the waiter something before dinner even started. When I went to the restroom, I found him and quietly explained the situation. I told him I was on a tight budget and would only be paying for what I ordered. He smiled and said, “No problem. We can separate the checks at any time.”

So when my friend confidently suggested splitting the bill, I simply looked at the waiter and said, “Actually, I’d like my check.”

He immediately pulled out the itemized receipts. My total came to just under $18. Hers was nearly $190.

The smile disappeared from her face.

She argued that splitting bills was what friends do, but I reminded her that I had told her beforehand I couldn’t afford an expensive meal. Choosing the most expensive items on the menu didn’t make her bill my responsibility.

After a long silence, she paid her own check.

We never went out to dinner again, but I learned an important lesson that night: setting clear boundaries can save both your wallet and your peace of mind.
