My roommate borrowed money from me during a tough month, promising he would pay me back as soon as he got his next paycheck. Weeks turned into months, and every time I asked, he had another excuse. Then he started acting like I was the one bothering him.
The day before his vacation, he packed expensive clothes, counted a thick stack of cash, and laughed in my face.
“You’re never seeing your money again,” he said, waving the bills in front of me. “Deal with it.”
I didn’t argue. I simply smiled and wished him a safe trip.
The moment he left the building, I walked to the leasing office with copies of our rental agreement and every message where he admitted he owed me money. Since the apartment lease was in my name, I explained that my roommate had moved out for two weeks and I wanted to remove his access code and collect his belongings into storage.
When he returned from vacation, his key card no longer worked. His boxes were neatly packed, waiting in the storage room, along with a printed invoice showing the money he owed me and the storage fees.
He called, furious, demanding to be let back in.
I calmly reminded him of his own words.
“You told me I wasn’t getting my money. I decided you weren’t getting free housing.”
Two days later, he arrived with every dollar he owed, apologized sincerely, and moved out for good. Some lessons are expensive—but only for the person who refuses to pay their debts.
