The Truth Behind the Apartment

My dad disappeared when I was four years old. Growing up, Mom always said he abandoned us and never looked back. I believed her. Then, last month, a lawyer called with unexpected news: my father had died and left me 50% of the apartment he once shared with my mother.
When I told Mom, her face changed instantly. She demanded that I sign the papers and give my share to her. She said she deserved everything because she had raised me alone. But something about her reaction felt strange, so I refused.
That night, she finally broke down and admitted the truth.
My father hadn’t abandoned us willingly. Years ago, he discovered that Mom had been hiding huge debts and lying about their finances. They fought constantly, and one day she told him to leave and never come back. He tried to contact me for years, but she intercepted his letters and changed our phone number.
I was stunned. The man I had hated my entire life had actually been trying to stay connected.
A few days later, the lawyer gave me a box of letters my father had saved. In every one, he wrote about missing me and hoping we would meet again someday.
I never got that chance. But for the first time, I understood that the apartment wasn’t the real inheritance.
