The Man in the Shower Wasn’t My Boyfriend

Later that day, I was horrified to discover what had really happened.

After I ran to the car and called 911, the police searched the house from top to bottom. They found no sign of an intruder, but one officer asked a simple question that made my stomach drop.

“Who locked the front door when you came home?”

I realized I had. Everything had been locked, and there were no broken windows or forced entry. That didn’t make any sense.

My boyfriend explained that he had come home just minutes before me. Exhausted after work, he had tossed a pile of blankets on the bed to dry after spilling coffee on them earlier. In the dim light, they looked exactly like someone sleeping under the covers.

Thinking I was resting, he quietly went to take a shower without turning on the bedroom light. When I arrived, I glanced at the bed, assumed the figure under the blankets was him, and walked straight to the bathroom—where I was shocked to see him standing under the running water.

Both of us had reacted to the confusion. I believed there was a stranger in our bedroom, while he believed someone had slipped into the house while he was showering.

The officers couldn’t help but laugh after the misunderstanding was cleared up, and eventually, so did we.

Now, whenever one of us leaves a pile of blankets on the bed, the other jokingly asks, “Is that you, or should I call 911?” It became a funny reminder that even the most terrifying moments can sometimes have the simplest explanations.
