They explained that a theft ring had been targeting shoppers, secretly hiding stolen goods in random cars to avoid being caught. The woman who returned my receipt had likely witnessed someone placing the bag in my trunk and used the note as a discreet warning.
Thanks to her quick thinking, the police were able to track down the group and return the stolen items. I never saw her again, but the experience stayed with me. Now, whenever I shop, I stay more alert—and I always double-check my car before leaving.
