Our neighbor had left a note at our door asking everyone in the neighborhood to use a gold porch light in support of their family. I didn’t understand.
“What does a gold porch light mean?”
Curious, I searched online and discovered that a gold porch light is often used to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Gold is the official color of childhood cancer awareness because children are considered more precious than gold.
My heart sank.
The next day, I saw several houses on our street glowing with soft gold lights. It was a beautiful sight, but it also carried a sadness I couldn’t ignore. Later that afternoon, I met another neighbor who quietly explained the situation. Their eight-year-old daughter had recently been diagnosed with leukemia and had just begun treatment.
Suddenly, the note made perfect sense.
That evening, my family replaced our regular porch bulb with a gold one. It seemed like such a small gesture, but when darkness fell and the street lit up in shades of gold, it felt powerful. Every glowing porch was a message saying, “You are not alone.”
A few days later, the family posted a thank-you message online. They said seeing the neighborhood unite had brought them comfort during one of the hardest times of their lives.
Sometimes, support doesn’t come from grand speeches or expensive gifts. Sometimes, it comes from a simple light shining in the dark, reminding a family that an entire community stands beside them.
