The Meaning Behind the Green Light

I live with my ex-husband. We divorced three years ago but stayed under the same roof for financial reasons and to co-parent peacefully. Most days, we barely spoke beyond grocery lists and bills.
Then one evening, I came home and noticed our porch light glowing green instead of white.
At first, I thought it was strange. Without asking me, he had replaced the bulb. When I questioned him, he simply said, “It’s for my father,” then walked away before I could ask more.
His father had passed away the year before, and my ex rarely talked about him. Still curious, I searched online for the meaning of a green porch light.
What I found made my chest tighten.
A green porch light is often used to honor veterans and show support for military families.
His father had served in the Army during Vietnam.
That night, I quietly sat beside my ex on the back patio and asked him about his dad. For the first time in years, he opened up. He told me stories about fishing trips, strict life lessons, and how his father never missed one of his baseball games as a child.
Then his voice cracked.
“I changed the light because Dad always said green meant hope,” he whispered. “And honestly… I’ve been feeling lost lately.”
For the first time since our divorce, I reached over and held his hand.
Sometimes, healing begins with the smallest light.
