“Sweetheart, if you are reading this, it means your father kept the truth from you all these years.
I never wanted to leave you. The night I packed my bags, I stood beside your bed for hours, crying while you slept. Your father told me if I stayed, he would take you away forever. I was young, scared, and had no money to fight him in court. He promised me he would tell you I loved you when you were older. But deep down, I feared he never would.
These shoes were the last thing I wore before I walked out that door. I hid this letter inside them because I prayed one day you’d find it.
I called every birthday. I sent letters, gifts, and photos. Most came back unopened. I even came to your school once when you were ten. I watched you laughing on the playground, wanting so badly to hug you. But your father saw me and threatened to call the police.
Please don’t hate me for disappearing. Not a single day passed that I didn’t think about you.
If you want to find me, I’ll be waiting at the little blue house near the lake.
Love forever,
Mom.”
By the time I finished reading, my mascara mixed with tears, and my whole life suddenly felt like a lie.
