The Note Beneath the Bill

I work as a waitress. Once, I was serving a couple that was constantly arguing. As they were leaving, I reached for the bill and noticed the woman taking the tip and putting it back into her wallet. I asked if something was wrong, and she said, “You did a great job. But I’m…”

“…not sure I can afford kindness tonight.”

I didn’t know what to say. Her eyes were red, like she had been crying before they even arrived. The man standing beside her rolled his eyes and muttered, “Can we go already?”

She apologized again and hurried after him.

The restaurant was quiet after they left, but I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Something felt off. When I cleared their table, I noticed a napkin folded neatly under the plate.

Inside was a handwritten message:

If he comes back asking about me, please tell him you never saw me after tonight.

My chest tightened.

An hour later, the man stormed back into the diner. He demanded to know if the woman had called or returned. I lied and said no. He glared at me for a long moment before leaving.

Three weeks passed.

Then one afternoon, a woman walked into the restaurant carrying a bouquet of daisies. It took me a second to recognize her.

She smiled softly and said, “That night, your lie gave me enough time to disappear safely.”
