Today My Wife Met My Girlfriend — Then My Son Said “Mom?”

Five years after losing her, I thought I had learned how to live with the silence. I raised our children, worked hours, and kept every promise I had made to their mother.
Then, last month, I met someone.
Her name was Emma. She was kind, patient, and somehow made me laugh without making me feel guilty. I knew my wife would have wanted me to be happy, but I still felt like I was betraying her memory.
Today, I decided it was time for Emma to meet my children.
Everything seemed normal. R was polite, while H barely looked up from his game. But when Emma walked into the room, H froze.
He stared at her for several seconds before whispering, “Mom?”
My heart stopped.
Emma looked confused. I apologized and told H that she wasn’t his mother.
But H shook his head.
“No, Dad. I know she isn’t Mom. But Grandma showed me a picture of Mom’s sister. She looks exactly like her.”
Emma went pale.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a photograph.
It showed my wife standing beside another young woman.
Emma pointed at the woman and whispered, “That’s my mother.”
I couldn’t speak.
The woman my children had met wasn’t a stranger.
She was the sister my wife had never told me existed.
