My hands shook when she showed me a faded envelope with my name written across the front. Inside were dozens of letters, all from him. Some were unopened. Some had been returned. Others had never been mailed at all.
Tears filled her eyes as she whispered, “I hid them. He never left you willingly.”
She confessed that after learning about my pregnancy, her son had insisted on staying with me and raising our baby together. She believed the child would destroy his future, so she lied to both of us. She told him I had moved away and wanted nothing to do with him. Then she came to me and claimed he had abandoned us.
For five years, we both lived with the same heartbreak, believing the other had walked away.
I couldn’t speak.
Then she handed me one final piece of paper—his current address.
“He never stopped looking for you,” she said quietly. “Every birthday he asked if I had changed my mind.”
A week later, I stood outside his front door with our little boy holding my hand. When he opened it, he froze. His eyes moved from me to the child, and tears streamed down his face before he whispered, “He has my smile.”
Our son looked up and asked, “Are you my dad?”
He dropped to his knees, hugged him tightly, and cried.
That day couldn’t erase five stolen years, but it gave us something even more precious—a chance to begin again as the family we were always meant to be.
