I bought new pillows and immediately wanted to cut the tags off. I can’t stand them brushing against my neck while I sleep. But the label read, “Under penalty of law this tag not to be removed except by the consumer.”
My husband laughed and said, “Don’t cut them. What if it’s actually illegal?”
That made me pause. The warning sounded so serious that I started wondering if removing the tag could somehow get us into trouble.
The next morning, I searched online and finally discovered the truth. The warning isn’t meant for people who buy the pillow—it’s meant for manufacturers and stores. Years ago, some companies filled pillows with dirty or unsafe materials and sold them as new. The law required labels to stay attached until the customer bought the product, so buyers could see exactly what was inside.
The words “except by the consumer” are the important part. Once you own the pillow, you’re completely free to remove the tag if you want.
I couldn’t stop laughing. My husband admitted he’d believed the warning his entire life. Together we cut the tags off every pillow in the house.
Now, whenever friends visit and ask about those strange labels, we tell them the story. It’s amazing how one sentence can confuse millions of people for decades.
And yes—those pillows are much more comfortable without the tags.
