The Face on the Camera

We were only gone for ten days on vacation. When we got home, the house felt… wrong. A drawer was open. The safe? Empty. Thousands of dollars—gone. My husband rushed to check everything else while I sat frozen. Then we remembered the new indoor cameras.
We pulled up the footage, hearts racing.
At 11:47 p.m. on the third night, someone entered the house. Hood up, moving quickly. Then the person turned—and I nearly dropped the laptop.
I couldn’t believe it.
It was my brother.
For a moment, neither of us spoke. My brother had always been welcome in our home. He had a spare key for emergencies and often helped us when we were away. I kept hoping I was mistaken, but the footage was clear. He walked straight to the safe, opened it, and took the money.
The next morning, I called him.
At first, he denied everything. But when I told him about the video, he went silent. Finally, he admitted the truth. He was drowning in debt and had convinced himself he would borrow the money and pay it back before we returned.
I was devastated. The money mattered, but the betrayal hurt far more.
A week later, he returned every dollar. Our relationship, however, was not so easy to repair. Trust takes years to build and only moments to break.
Even now, whenever I watch that footage, I’m reminded that sometimes the deepest wounds come from the people you love most.
