When I helped him undress and put him to bed, I saw a reply written across his back.
It said:
“DON’T WORRY, WE TRIED. HE WOULDN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT YOU.”
I stared at it for a second before bursting into laughter.
The next morning, my husband woke up with a pounding headache and no memory of the message. When I showed him his back in the mirror, he looked completely confused.
“What happened?” he asked.
Later that day, one of his coworkers called to check on him and couldn’t stop laughing.
She explained that someone at the party noticed the warning I’d written on his chest. Instead of making fun of it, everyone thought it was adorable. Throughout the evening, people teased him, asking if he was “under strict supervision.”
One coworker grabbed a washable marker and wrote the reply on his back while everyone cheered.
“He spent the entire night bragging about you,” she said. “Every chance he got, he told us how lucky he was to have a wife who still made him smile after all these years.”
I looked over at my husband, who was blushing brighter than I’d ever seen.
“So,” I teased, “you survived the party after all?”
He smiled, wrapped his arms around me, and replied, “There was never any danger. My heart was already taken long before I walked through that door.”
The marker washed off that evening, but the memory stayed with us. Every Christmas since then, we’ve laughed about the joke that turned into one of our favorite stories—and a reminder that trust and love are always worth celebrating.
