My roommate borrowed money from me during a difficult time and promised he would pay me back within a month. Weeks turned into months, and every time I asked about it, he came up with a different excuse. Then, just before leaving for a vacation, he pulled a thick stack of cash from his wallet, waved it in my face, and laughed. “You’re not getting a single dollar,” he said before walking out the door.
The second he left the building, I remembered something important. We shared the apartment, but the internet account, streaming services, and every utility except the rent were under my name. Since he had made it clear he had no intention of paying me back, I decided I was done doing him favors.
I changed every password, canceled the premium subscriptions he enjoyed, and contacted the utility companies to remove him from the accounts before the next billing cycle. I also packed his belongings from the shared living room into neat boxes and moved them into his bedroom so I could finally reclaim the common space.
When he returned from his trip, he was furious. Nothing worked, and he realized he would have to set everything up himself. I calmly reminded him about the money he owed me. Two days later, he handed me every cent, along with a reluctant apology.
From that day on, he never borrowed another dollar—or underestimated me again.
