The Secret She Had Been Hiding

My son is 22, and his girlfriend had just moved in with us. I tried to be fair. But bills were rising, and I felt like a hotel manager. I told him, “If she’s going to live here, she has to pay.”

He looked at me strangely, and I froze when he quietly said, “Mom, didn’t she tell you that she’s been paying?”

I stared at him. “What do you mean?”

He explained that for the last four months, his girlfriend had been giving him money every month specifically to help with household expenses. I was shocked. I thought she was living here for free. My son then admitted that he never gave me the money. Instead, he had been saving it in a separate account.

Before I could get angry, he opened his phone and showed me the balance. There was nearly $5,000 in it.

“Why?” I asked.

His girlfriend smiled nervously and said, “Because we wanted to surprise you.”

The next day, they took me to the backyard. While I had been busy worrying about bills, they had been planning something else. The old deck, which had become unsafe and worn down, was about to be replaced. The money she had been contributing was being saved to help pay for the renovation.

I felt embarrassed for assuming the worst. Instead of being irresponsible, she had been thoughtful and generous all along.

That evening, I apologized to both of them. We shared dinner together, and for the first time, I stopped seeing her as my son’s girlfriend and started seeing her as family.
