The Man in Dad’s Office

Dad passed and left me his house. My stepsister wasn’t on the will, so I told her to leave. Today, my phone alerted me to motion at 4 a.m. I opened the security app expecting to see her. But my stomach flipped when I saw who actually walked in instead…

A man in a dark coat unlocked the front door like he owned the place.

I stared at the screen, confused. He walked straight through the hallway and into Dad’s old office — the one that had been locked since the funeral. My hands shook as I called the police, then rushed downstairs with a baseball bat.

By the time I reached the office, the door was open.

And my stepsister was there too.

She looked terrified. “I tried to warn you,” she whispered.

The stranger slowly turned toward us. He was older, gray-haired, calm. Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“I worked with your father for twenty years.”

He opened a briefcase stuffed with documents and bank records. Hidden accounts. Property deeds. Letters signed by Dad himself.

My father had been hiding massive debts for years. Worse, the house legally belonged to a company that was collapsing financially.

“If you keep this place,” the man said quietly, “the bank takes everything.”

I looked at my stepsister, suddenly understanding why Dad had secretly kept helping her after the divorce. She wasn’t left out because he didn’t love her.

He was trying to protect her from inheriting the disaster.
