The Woman I Called a Nobody

My sister raised me after mom passed away. She was 19, and I was 12. Unlike her, I went to college. I studied and became a doctor. At graduation, I said, “See… I climbed the ladder. You took the easy road and became a nobody.”

She smiled and left.

No calls for three months. I thought she was just mad at me.

Then I finally visited.

I was back in town for the first time in years. I walked toward the small apartment where we grew up, expecting her to open the door with that same tired smile she always had. But the place was empty. A neighbor recognized me instantly and froze.

“You don’t know?” she whispered.

My stomach dropped.

She told me my sister had been working three jobs for years to pay for my tuition, books, rent, and even my graduation suit. She skipped meals so I could stay in school. When she got sick, she hid it from everyone because she didn’t want to distract me before my exams.

She had passed away six weeks earlier.

The neighbor handed me a box she had left behind. Inside was every letter I had ever sent her, every school photo, and a note on top.

“I’m proud of you, little brother. I’d do it all again.”

I collapsed onto the floor crying, realizing the “nobody” I mocked was the only reason I became somebody at all.
