The Truth He Carried

My mom died in a car crash while Dad was driving. He survived, but part of him never really came home. For years he lived like a shadow, staring at old photographs and whispering apologies to no one. Then, three years later, Alzheimer’s took the rest of him. Soon he forgot birthdays, faces, even my name. Some days he looked at me like I was a stranger sitting in his house.

But last month, on Mom’s birthday, something changed.

I was helping him eat dinner when his eyes suddenly sharpened. For the first time in years, he spoke clearly.

“Sit down,” he whispered. “I need to tell you the truth.”

My heart stopped.

He grabbed my wrist with trembling fingers. “Your mom died because I… I caused the crash.”

I stared at him, unable to breathe.

He began to cry. “We were arguing. She found out about the affair. I took my eyes off the road for one second… and then the truck came.”

The room spun around me.

“But that’s not the worst part,” he said.

I felt cold all over.

“She was pregnant.”

For years, I believed fate had stolen my mother. But in one terrible moment, I realized my father had been carrying the weight of that night alone, trapped between guilt and memory, until the truth finally escaped before his mind disappeared forever.
