The Letter in My Grandmother’s Trunk

I found a letter in my late grandmother’s old trunk after she passed away. It was addressed to my mother, but it wasn’t from a family member.
Curious, I opened it. The letter was from a man I had never met—a man who claimed to have known my grandmother many years ago.
What he wrote next made my heart stop.
He revealed a secret about my family that had been hidden for decades. According to the letter, my grandmother had promised this man something before she married my grandfather.
I didn’t know what to believe, so I showed the letter to my mother.
The moment she saw it, her face changed.
She quietly asked me where I had found it.
When I told her, she sat down and whispered, “I thought your grandmother destroyed this.”
Then she finally told me the truth.
Before my grandparents married, my grandmother had a child she was forced to give up. Everyone in the family believed that child had disappeared forever.
But the letter claimed otherwise.
The child had grown up under another name and had been searching for our family for years.
At the bottom of the letter was a phone number.
My mother stared at it for several minutes before finally picking up her phone.
She called the number.
A man answered.
And the first thing he said was:
“I’ve been waiting thirty years for this call.”
