The mistress folded her arms and smirked.
“I’m the woman he’s going to marry after he leaves you,” she said confidently. “He told me your marriage is already over.”
Martha didn’t raise her voice. She simply reached into her handbag and placed a folder on the kitchen table.
“I didn’t come to fight,” she said calmly. “I came to see whether you knew the truth.”
Inside the folder were bank statements, loan documents, and photos of the farmhouse Jake had promised to build “for them.” Every payment had come from Martha’s account.
The mistress stared at the papers, her smile slowly disappearing.
“He told me he bought all this himself,” she whispered.
“He also told me he was divorced, didn’t he?” Martha asked.
The young woman nodded, her face turning pale.
Just then, the front door opened.
Jake walked in carrying flowers, but the bouquet slipped from his hands when he saw both women standing together.
Neither of them said a word.
Martha quietly handed him the divorce papers.
The mistress stepped back and removed the engagement ring he had given her only a week before.
“So,” she said, placing it in his hand, “you lied to both of us.”
Jake tried to explain, but neither woman listened.
Martha walked away with her dignity intact.
