I gasped in shock as I turned the tiny green soldier over. On the bottom was a small compartment I had never noticed before. My hands trembled as I carefully opened it. Folded inside was a tiny piece of paper.
I unfolded it and read, “A true soldier protects others with kindness, not anger. Love, Grandpa.”
I stared at the note in disbelief. Every birthday for over ten years, I had received one of these soldiers without ever realizing they all contained hidden messages.
My sister smiled and brought out a small box. “I kept every note Grandpa asked me to save in case you never found them,” she said.
One by one, I read each message. Some offered advice about courage, honesty, patience, and forgiveness. Others shared funny memories from Grandpa’s childhood. A few simply reminded me how proud he was of the person I was becoming.
The final soldier held a slightly larger note.
“If you’re reading this, you’ve finally looked closely enough. Life is full of gifts that people miss because they’re in a hurry. Slow down. Notice the little things. They often matter the most. No matter where life takes you, remember that I have always believed in you. I’m proud to be your grandpa.”
By the time I finished reading, tears filled my eyes. Those plastic soldiers were never toys—they were a lifetime of love, carefully hidden in plain sight, waiting for the day I was ready to truly see them.
