The Woman Who Returned for Revenge

I’m a waitress. One rainy evening, a woman came into the diner with two young kids, begging for leftovers. The children looked freezing and exhausted. My heart broke for them.

I knew the rules — employees weren’t allowed to give away food without permission. But I couldn’t ignore those hungry faces. I packed fresh hot meals, extra fries, and even desserts to-go. The woman smiled strangely before leaving and said, “We’ll meet again.”

The next morning, my boss stormed into the kitchen furious.

“Check the camera footage!” he yelled.

My stomach dropped as we watched the recording. I collapsed into a chair when I saw the woman discreetly slipping something into her purse while I packed the food.

Silverware.

Dozens of expensive engraved utensils had disappeared from the restaurant that night. My boss thought I helped her steal them.

I tried explaining, but the footage looked terrible. Tears burned my eyes as I realized I might lose my job for trying to help someone.

Then the front door suddenly opened.

The woman walked back in holding a large bag.

Everyone froze.

She placed every piece of silverware on the counter and quietly admitted the truth. She said her abusive ex had forced her to steal things to repay his debts, but after seeing kindness for the first time in months, she couldn’t go through with it.

Then she handed my boss an envelope.

Inside was cash — and a job application.
