My heart sank when I saw her standing alone in the backyard, clutching a small photo and crying. She carefully dug a tiny hole beneath the old oak tree and buried an envelope before whispering, “I’m sorry.”
The next morning, after she left for a doctor’s appointment, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I uncovered the envelope and found ultrasound pictures, a positive pregnancy test, and several unopened letters addressed to her ex.
Every letter told the same heartbreaking story. She had tried over and over to tell him she was pregnant, but she never mailed them. Fear convinced her that he would reject her or accuse her of lying. Instead, she packed her bags and left before giving him the chance.
That evening, I gently admitted what I had found. She broke down in tears.
“I was terrified,” she confessed. “He asked me to leave after we argued. I thought it meant he never wanted to see me again.”
I contacted her ex and asked him to come over. When he arrived, I handed him the letters. As he read them, tears filled his eyes.
“I never knew,” he whispered. “I would never have abandoned our baby.”
