The Man I Refused to Call Dad

I was only five years old when my father died. My mother quickly remarried a man who always asked me to call him “Dad,” but I didn’t want to… until one day I realized that he was…
the man who had been there for me all along.
At first, I hated him for taking my father’s place. I refused to hold his hand, ignored his birthday wishes, and never called him anything but his name. He never forced me. He simply stayed.
When I was sick, he sat beside my bed all night. When I started school, he was the one waiting outside every morning. He taught me how to ride a bicycle, helped me with homework, and quietly attended every school event.
Years passed, and I began noticing the little things. He always made sure I had what I needed, even when money was tight. He never spoke badly about my real father. Instead, he would tell me, “Your dad would be proud of you.”
Then, when I was sixteen, I accidentally found an old box in his closet. Inside were photographs of my father, my childhood drawings, and every birthday card I had ever given him.
That was when I finally understood…
He had never tried to replace my father.
He had simply chosen to love me.
